Cheerleading squads have a lot of traditions and bonding ideas and Douglas Wyoming High has a really special one, they create boxes!
This has been in place for the last six years, but the idea is that the returning squad members show the rookies how to make the boxes and as a team they work on them together. This box is used for keeping all their belongings such as pom-poms, warm up, etc. they keep the girls right in the game and prepared for anything!
The squad is made up of Freshman 3, Sophomore 5, Juniors 3,and Seniors 8. The squad’s coach Margo Shatto has been coaching for twelve years and they have some great achievements such as Girl Stunts: 4 first places, 3 second places, and 2 third places; No stunts in the girls category: they place second or third; and when there is coed stunting: they have 1 of all three places!
This year’s squad is a little smaller and is closer than ever! The big goal for the squad is to be the best squad they can be and get more involved with the community!
You probably have heard of Greeley Central Cheer team around Colorado, the team loves to show their spirit and involvement in the community! That's not even close to the beginning of it, the team has so much spirit that they cheer for every sport at the High school such as: football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country, wrestling and baseball.
This squad involves 17 girls and 5 boys ranging from 2 freshman, 9 sophomores, 7 juniors, 4 seniors. The team has spent the season perfecting their sideline cheers and routines from camp to be performed for the first home football game.
The big goal for the team is to make the top 5 in the Colorado State Cheer Competition in December! The coaches that are leading the way are Lisa McGee along with her Assistant Sarah that just joined this summer!
Lisa started the season feeling overwhelmed and a little intimidated, but as the season has gone along they have learned to respect and grow together. "I can honestly say I am proud to know and coach every single athlete on this team. They blow me away every day." (Lisa McGee)
Greeley Central High pom squad has a lot accomplished in such a short time! This team is the first in five years for the High school; they began by holding auditions on August 14th where fourteen members were added (six juniors and 8 seniors).
The girls worked hard and put in the dedication to make up a fun and exciting routine just in time for the first home game (which was only a few short weeks after auditions). hey then got back to work on the second performance so they could surprise their fans with a brand new routine for the second home game!
During the second game between quarters Dominick from the cheerleading squad asked Allie from the pom squad to the homecoming dance with the help of the cheer squad!
The team is led by a new coach Jennifer Berg, this is Jennifer’s first year coaching high school pom, but her background dancing in North Dakota and in college for the University of Wyoming definitely have prepared her for what’s in store! She has said that this team is hard working and shows great team spirit at every event they attend! The plan for this season is to have fun and at least enter one competition! She is so proud of their strong enthusiasm for dance! This team is sure to impress and entertain the crowds at all the home games!
The Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs are a cheerleading squad in Rock Springs, WY. The cheer squad has 7 ladies and 2 guys but are looking to fill up the team. (since the writing of this article, they now have a full team including a mascot!)
Part of what the team is looking for is: sharp cheer motions, dance ability, gymnastics background, and confidence just to name a few. More criteria and information is located on their website www.wwcc.cc.wy.us/athletics.
Coach Laura Grossnickle has been the coach since 2001 and is leading the team again this year! The team has been known to cheer for the Mustangs Volleyball, Basketball and more during all time outs show off their stunting skills and wow the crowds! We will continue to catch up with Laura and the Mustangs throughout the season! Go Mustangs!
The Kemmerer Rangers Cheerleading Squad has so much to look forward to From Mini Cheer camp to the Homecoming festivities for the school! High expectations are set in place and this group of girls is ready for the challenge. The girls have started practice for the year all the way back in June and plan to finish strong until March when they claim the trophy. The coach pushing the girls to their fullest is Aarika Walker with assistance from younger sister Abby Housley. Aarika and Abby both know how it feels for these girls because they were a part of the team for four years!
Aarika also went on to cheer at the University of Wyoming for four years! The squad itself has 5 returners: Samie Neilson, Paige Ketelson, Kelsi Nicotera, Shanaya Antilla, Katie Werner and 3rookies: Kiera Black, Ashley Mcphie, Jessica Mendoza with 1 alternate: Amber Johnston ready to show what they have been preparing for all season!

Rebecca in Aurora, CO:
Do you do anything to calm your nerves? I get so nervous
before auditions and performing at games and I can't seem to beat
it.
Nerves during auditions are a good thing! It means that you care about the
outcome. The best thing to do is channel that nervous energy into adrenaline and
excitement. Consider bringing an mp3 player with your favorite calming music or
pump up music to get you energized while you wait for your audition. Envision
yourself wearing that uniform, performing for the crowd, making the judges smile
and nod their head. And practice practice practice that audition routine....
because if the nerves get the best of you and cause a momentary lapse, you'll
know the material so well you can jump right back in without it affecting your
confidence. Best of luck!
It’s that time of year when extra calories are everywhere – cakes, cookies and pies wherever you look, chocolate kisses in your stocking or a cup of eggnog calling your name. It all adds up and if you’re like most Americans, you’ll put on a few pounds before 2010 ends.
Here are a few tips that you can utilize to avoid falling into the holiday weight gain trap.
1. Stick to a Regular Routine
It’s easy to fall into bad habits during the holiday months, but if you can maintain a regular routine, with regard to sleep and exercise, it can help you beat holiday weight gain. Research shows a direct correlation between the number of hours slept and the desire to eat too much. Those who were most sleep deprived had an overwhelming desire to eat, and didn’t know when to stop. Regular exercise is also an important part of effective weight loss. It helps to control your weight by using excess calories that otherwise would be stored as fat.
2. Plan Ahead
Drink plenty of water and eat something with protein before going to those holiday parties and family gatherings. Protein fills you up and you won’t be as likely to overeat when you get to the party. I like a cup of cottage cheese with strawberries drizzled with balsamic vinegar or grilled fish filet I have prepared prior for the week.
3. Be Selective
My family dinners are buffet style. To keep track of the amount of calories I consume I like to first go through the line and choose leaner options like the salad greens, vegetables (non starchy ones so potatoes and yams are not included) fruits, whole grains and lean meats or beans. After eating my first round I wait 20 minutes because this is about the time it takes for your stomach to register to the brain that it is full. This way if you are still craving the yummy yet more calorie and fat dense foods like cheesy potatoes and green bean casserole, then at least you will not be eating as much. Also, limit your alcohol consumption, as it only adds extra calories, has no nutritional value and can cause you not to have control.
4. Don’t Give Up
Remember, it’s not an all or nothing situation. If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up and dwell on it for days. You do not want to completely deprive yourself from the foods you love. Just use your head and eat them in moderation with a consistent workout regimen.
There you go cheerleaders, four simple ways to get you through the holidays without gaining weight, now it's up to you...
